Job Profile Summary

The Automation and Controls Principal Engineer is an experienced Subject Matter Expert (SME) responsible for design and installation of mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment including automation, controls and metrology systems. The candidate will be familiar with various SCADA/IT/ Data Acquisition systems. The Automation and Controls Principal Engineer delivers results in alignment to the corporate strategy to improve manufacturing yield, process availability and productivity and is responsible for understanding and defining new technology and standardizing automation and controls systems within the company, including but not limited to: equipment design, installation and commissioning, materials of construction, product handling, equipment suppliers, services, spares, programming, controls, and safe design. The Automation and Controls Principal Engineer reports to a Director within the Global Engineering organization.

  • Job Description
    • DMAIC (or similar) problem solving techniques, of complex manufacturing equipment issues
    • Works with Corporate supply chain and operations teams to estimate project costs and timelines, prepare business cases and engage equipment suppliers to deliver Global Engineering objectives
    • Utilizes experience and a strong understanding of manufacturing techniques and associated equipment design/function to improve current or develop new manufacturing processes to meet internal criteria and customer requirements.
    • Works with multifunctional teams to achieve project goals, tracks performance of projects regularly throughout the life of the project and Effectively communicates project updates to leadership
    • Identifies and leads technology transfers of best-known methods to meet production requirements
    • Works with IT to define and interface SCADA and Data collection systems, to IT systems, (Machine interface systems) across CoorsTek’s manufacturing facilities
    • Manages Equipment projects, including training, guiding plant engineering and manufacturing team members
    • Developing Equipment Specification Protocol documentation with (not limited to) the purchasing group, quality teams, legal and compliance, and other departments as required, on equipment design performance requirements, and installation
    • Collaborating with the Global Engineering staff and operations engineering teams to deliver project results using stage gate and CORE methodologies to achieve verifiable results
    • Key interface with CoorsTek engineers / technicians and external manufacturers that supply manufacturing equipment to CoorsTek, from conceptualization, specification, design, manufacture, through implementation into manufacturing and beyond
    • Mentors junior engineers within the company to advance leadership and engineering capability within CoorsTek.
    • Stays informed of the latest trends within automation, controls and metrology, communicates information to the broader community and works with the Global Engineering portfolio manager and operations leaders to plan new technology introductions.

Job Requirements:

Required Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Software engineering or related experience (Multi-discipline or master’s degree preferred)

Experience: 

    • A minimum of 8 years of automation, controls or metrology systems related engineering experience required.
    • Experience with Siemens or Allen Bradley PLC’s.
    • Experience with Fanuc Robot programming and integration to CNC machines
    • Track record of leadership and mentorship.
    • Experience working with supply chain or directly managing equipment suppliers and integrators
    • Led, designed, developed, built, programmed, installed and validated projects in an automated engineering environment
    • Leading the commissioning of equipment for large capital projects
    • Experience in highly automated projects
